There is no specific requirement. Just follow the standards of haiku.

Rules

The Haiku must follow the traditional standards. For those who are not familiar with this style of poetry I suggest you look it up. A good reference site to use is http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Haiku-Poem

The winners of the Haiku Contest will be chosen via public poll.

Awards

Awards will be given out to the top three finalist. A very special "Mods Award" will be given to one lucky person who impresses me the most.

2009-07-29 [another brick in the wall]: I have two questions:
are comical haikus allowed, or do they have to be serious?
and no matter how I work with mine, the last line falls short one syllable without making it sound rather unnatural.. could I still enter it in with one syllable short?
